Description
Description
A kitchen in the boot, on a frame you can grow into. LEVEL BOX is the same platform as LEVEL, set up for cooking and storage instead of sleeping: pull-out drawers, a worktop at standing-lean height, and a sliding base that brings the whole lot out to the tailgate.
There is no bed on it today — that is the point. If you are not sleeping in the car, a bed is a large flat thing in the way of the cooking. The frame underneath is the same one, so the sliding bed can be added whenever you want it, on either side.
One frame, three ways
LEVEL, LEVEL SOLO and LEVEL BOX are the same platform. Same adjustable legs, same panel, same drawer runners. What changes is what sits on top — and you can change that later without buying another platform.
| LEVEL | Full-width bed. Two people sleep across the boot. |
| LEVEL SOLO | Bed down one half, 50/50. Modules on the other half. |
| LEVEL BOX — you are here | No bed. Kitchen and storage across the frame. |
It works in both directions. Start with LEVEL BOX and add the sliding bed and the side unit when you want them. Start with the full set and take modules off when you need the space back. Nothing is welded to anything.
The bed sits on whichever side you want. Left or right — whichever suits your tailgate, the kerb you park against, and which door you climb in by. Whatever modules you have take the other half.
Cooking, honestly
Cook at the open tailgate, standing — the tailgate keeps the rain off and the worktop is at the right height to work at rather than crouch over. The drawer runners lock in both positions, so nothing rolls away when you have parked on a camber with a hot pan out.
Never run a gas burner inside a closed cabin. This is a tailgate kitchen, not an indoor one.
How to choose
Three decisions, all on this page:
| Elevation | Standard for the flattest bed and the most headroom. +100 mm when you want more room underneath than above you. |
| Drawer | Add gives you the slide-out drawer with the accessory panel and the pull-out worktop. Without leaves the space open for crates and bags — and you can add the drawer later. |
| Add-on | Side storage for tall gear. Side storage for fridge is the same unit cut around a Dometic drawer fridge — the fridge is not included, you buy it separately, which is why this option costs less than the solid one. ½ sliding base pulls half the platform out to the tailgate; Full sliding base brings the whole thing out. |
Does it fit my car?
LEVEL is adjustable rather than cut to one vehicle. Boots slope, seats recline, depth varies — the steel legs dial all of that out so the top sits horizontal. Set them once for your car; take it to the next car and set them again.
It fits most large and medium SUVs, estates and EVs. It does not fit a compact boot — if your car is small, a full-length flat bed is not going to happen and we would rather say so here. Pick your car on the platforms page and it will tell you which of ours works.
Build
- Powder-coated steel frame — rigid, rust-resistant, dark grey
- Fully adjustable legs — set once for your car, then leave them
- High-density engineered panel: E0 low-emission, water-resistant
- Bamboo worktop, pulls out from under the drawer so you keep drawer access while you cook
- Accessory panel on the drawer face — works with common modular mounting systems
- Drawer rated 50 kg / 110 lb
- Arrives fully assembled. Lift it in, strap it down, drive. Nothing is drilled, bolted or glued to the car
- Made in New Zealand, on 100% renewable energy
Dimensions depend on your car, because the legs adjust to it. Measure your boot before ordering, or send us the model and year and we will check it for you.

- Arrives fully assembled
Lift it in, strap it down, drive.
- Bed for two, drawer below
Full-width flat bed. Gear underneath, not on top of you.
- Pull-out worktop
Cook on it while the drawer stays open.
- Folds away
Your car stays a car. No modifications, ever.

Why Travelers Love the BOX LEVEL
-
Truly Level — In Most Cars
Boots slope, seats recline. The adjustable legs dial it all out in most SUVs, estates and wagons. Set it once, and it is right every trip after.
-
Arrives Fully Assembled
No frame to build, no legs to clip on, no parts to store. Lift it in, strap it down, drive.
-
Folds Away — Car Stays a Car
Weekend over? The platform folds down and your boot is a boot again. No permanent mods, ever.
-
Kitchen First, No Bed
On purpose. If you are not sleeping in the car, a bed is a large flat thing in the way of the cooking. Pull-out drawers and a worktop at standing-lean height.
-
Make your BOX
Side storage or the base brings the whole kitchen out to the open tailgate, so you can cook standing with the hatch keeping the rain off. The fridge unit is cut around a Dometic CD30, bought separately.
-
One System — Add Later
Same frame as LEVEL and LEVEL BOX. Add the full-width bed when two of you travel, or strip back to the kitchen. Nothing is welded.
How many nights until it pays off?

The reasoning behind it
The cost that keeps running
Anything on the roof is paid for every day, not just on camping days. On the same road trip our own Tesla used 140 Wh/km with a bare roof and 185 Wh/km with a roof box — 32% more energy, about a quarter of the range. A roof tent is bulkier than a box, so that's the floor. The full measurement and its caveats →
A platform is in the boot on Friday and in the garage on Monday, so it costs nothing to carry.
The honest part — a platform is not the cheapest
A platform is not the cheapest way to sleep in your car. An air mattress costs $50. But you'll fight it every morning — and then you'll stop going.
That's the real comparison. Not price against price, but how many nights you actually end up spending outside. A platform is the setup you'll still be using in five years.
Flat is not the same as level
Two different problems, and most people only fix one. A mattress bridges the gap over the folded seats, so the surface becomes flat. It does nothing about the slope — almost every boot floor tilts toward the tailgate, and you spend the night sliding downhill in your sleeping bag.
A platform on fixed legs fixes the gap. A platform on adjustable legs fixes both: set the legs once for your car and the bed is genuinely horizontal, every trip after. The full breakdown of gap, slope and fixes →
When a platform is the wrong buy
Four cases where we'd tell you not to:
- You want to try one night and see. Buy a $50 mattress first. If you go out three times in a season, then talk to us.
- You camp in a group and cook outside all evening. A tent gives you a room to stand in. The car is a bedroom, not a living room.
- You need to stand up inside. No car platform gives you that. A van does.
- Your boot is shorter than you are. Some cars simply don't have the length. We'd rather tell you that before you order than after.
Pick by what you're optimising for
- Cheapest possible — mattress in the boot.
- Most space for the money — tent.
- The whole boot completely free while you sleep — roof tent.
- Living in it for months — campervan.
- Regular weekends, and your car has to be a car on Monday — platform.
