Best SUV Models for Couples Who Love Weekend Car Camping
"Best SUV for camping" lists usually rank cars by cargo volume. Volume tells you how much luggage fits. It tells you nothing about whether you fit. Two adults sleeping need length, flatness and width — in that order.
- Flat length — 180 cm (about 71") works for most people; 190 cm+ (76") if either of you is over 6 ft.
- Flatness — how big is the step between folded seatbacks and the boot floor.
- Width between the arches — this is what decides whether two people sleep side by side or one of you sleeps diagonally.
Weekend car camping is the easiest reset a couple can buy: no van, no rooftop tent, no trip planning. Just an SUV that's actually long enough to sleep in — which is where most people get it wrong before they've even left the driveway.
Measure your car in five minutes
Before you shortlist a single model, take a tape measure to the car you already own. Fold the rear seats and take three measurements:
| What to measure | How | What's good |
|---|---|---|
| Flat length | From the tailgate threshold to the back of the front seats, with the front seats pushed forward as far as you'd tolerate. | 180 cm / 71" is enough for most adults. 190 cm / 76" and taller sleepers stretch out properly. |
| The step | Height difference between the folded seatbacks and the boot floor. | Smaller is better. Some estates and SUVs come within an inch or two; many leave a real ditch. |
| Width between wheel arches | Narrowest point across the load area. | This is what decides whether two people sleep side by side or one of you sleeps diagonally. |
| Headroom | Boot floor to the roof lining. | Around 90 cm / 35" is generous for an SUV — but read the note below before assuming what it buys you. |
Cargo volume in litres is the number every brochure gives you and the one that matters least. Length and width are what you sleep on.
You will read — including in earlier versions of this page — that around 90 cm of boot height "lets you sit up on the bed". It doesn't.
90 cm is measured from the boot floor. A platform raises you 21–31 cm, and a mattress takes a few more. What's left above the bed is roughly 55–65 cm — while an adult's seated height is around 85–95 cm. No SUV boot lets you sit fully upright on a raised bed, ours included.
What you actually get is propped up against the rear seats with your legs out. That's fine for a book and a coffee. It isn't a chair, and anyone selling it as one hasn't slept in it.
The three numbers we need to confirm a fit
| Number | Where to measure |
|---|---|
| Elevation | Fold half the rear seats down. Level = 7 cm above the folded seat, but never under 20 cm from the floor. Take whichever is higher. |
| Width | Boot open. Narrowest gap between left and right wheel arches, straight across, at your elevation level. |
| Closed depth | Tailgate closed. Seatback to tailgate at the elevation level — measured at the edges, not down the middle, and take the smaller. |
Full method, and an instant answer once you have the numbers: how to measure your trunk.

The SUVs couples keep coming back to
These are the vehicles we build for most often, and what actually makes each of them work.
| Model | Load length, seats folded | The deciding detail |
|---|---|---|
| Subaru Outback | ~200 cm / 80" | Folded seatbacks sit within 2–5 cm of the floor — a lip, not a step. The benchmark for two adults lengthwise. |
| Tesla Model Y | Flat-folding seats, sloping boot floor | Camp Mode holds cabin temperature overnight with no idling. Sub-trunk takes a fridge without stealing bed space. Our −7 °C test: 9 hours, 24% battery. |
| Toyota RAV4 | Up to ~205 cm total, but usable flat floor 165–180 cm | The gap between those two numbers is the footwell. Near six feet? You need a platform bridging it, not a mattress on the floor. |
| Hyundai Tucson | Full sleeping length for two, seats down | Trade is width and headroom. Fine for two who don't mind being close. |
| VW Tiguan | Sliding rear bench on many versions | Buys back several centimetres of length that fixed-bench rivals don't have. |
Figures vary by model year, trim and market — measure your own car before you buy anything.
Not on this list? Not a verdict. Most estates, wagons and mid-size SUVs work once the shape underneath is fixed.
You can fill every gap under your mattress and still slide toward your feet all night. Flat means no dips and no step. Level means horizontal. Folded rear seats are almost never either.
That's why the honest question isn't "which SUV is flat?" — very few are — but "which SUV is long enough, and how do I make the surface level?" We go through all three problems (the ditch, the car's slope, and the ground you parked on) in how to fix the seat gap and slope.
What actually makes a weekend work
- A level bed, not just a long one. A platform sits above the seat shapes instead of following them, so the surface is the same every trip regardless of how your particular car folds.
- Gear underneath, not around you. The difference between a comfortable night and an argument at 11pm is usually where the bags went.
- Setup you'll still do on a Friday when you're tired. If it takes twenty minutes, you'll do it twice a year.
- A car that's still a car on Monday. Anything permanent turns your weekend hobby into a daily compromise.
For most SUVs and estates, LEVEL handles this with adjustable legs that cancel the boot slope — set once for your car, right every trip after, and it arrives fully assembled. For a Tesla Model Y, the PRO is built specifically around that boot, including lift-up access to the sub-trunk so the fridge stays reachable with the bed made. Anything unusual, we 3D-scan and build custom.
Long enough and wide enough. The number couples miss is the one above them.
Height isn't about lying flat — almost any car manages that. It's about bending your knees up while you read, and rolling onto your side without a manoeuvre. Two people amplify both, and every centimetre of storage you gain underneath is a centimetre you lose above.

What size SUV do I need to sleep in?
Measure the flat length from the tailgate to the back of the front seats with the rear seats folded. Around 180 cm (71") suits most adults; 190 cm (76") or more if either of you is over six feet. Cargo volume in litres doesn't answer this question.
Can two adults sleep in a mid-size SUV?
Usually yes, if the width between the wheel arches allows it. Length is the first constraint, width the second. Below about 100 cm of usable width, one of you will notice.
Which SUV is best for car camping couples?
By numbers, the Subaru Outback is hard to beat — roughly 200 cm of load length with seats folded and almost no step. For EVs, the Tesla Model Y adds Camp Mode and a sub-trunk for the fridge. But the best SUV is usually the one already in your driveway, once the sleeping surface is fixed.
Do I need a platform, or is a mattress enough?
A mattress solves softness. It doesn't solve the step between the seats and the boot floor, or the slope of the folded seats. If you wake up sliding downhill or with a ridge under your back, the problem is the shape underneath, not the padding on top.
Can I sit up on the bed in an SUV?
Not fully upright. Around 90 cm of boot height sounds generous, but a platform raises you 21–31 cm and the mattress takes more — leaving roughly 55–65 cm above the bed against a seated height of about 85–95 cm. What you get is propped up against the rear seats with your legs out, which works for reading and waiting out rain.
My car isn't on the list. Does that mean it won't work?
No. Most estates, wagons and mid-size SUVs work. Send us the model and year and we'll tell you honestly whether it fits, or build a custom platform from a 3D scan.
Not sure your car makes the cut?
Three numbers, five minutes, one tape measure — and the page gives you the answer as you type. Including "it won't fit", if that's the truth. We'd rather say no than sell you the wrong thing.
Duties and taxes are included in the price — nothing extra on delivery.
