Where Can You Sleep in Your Car in the USA? What You Need to Know

⚠️ It depends on the state, the land, and the city

There's no single US rule. The key distinction everywhere: you can usually park and sleep inside your vehicle, but you can't camp (no chairs, awnings or cooking outside). Public lands (BLM) and many rest areas are friendly; big cities are often restricted.

  • ✅ BLM land (up to ~14 days), national forests, many rest areas, some Walmarts.
  • ⚠️ Rest-area limits vary by state (2–24 hrs); only ~12 states clearly allow overnight.
  • 🚫 Many cities restrict street sleeping (e.g. parts of LA, SF, NYC).

Visiting national parks, road-tripping Route 66, or chasing festivals? Sleeping in your car can be a cheap, flexible way to see the States — if you know where overnight stays are allowed.

Quick answer: the rules at a glance

Can you sleep in your car? Often yes — but it varies by state, land manager and city. The rule is "park, don't camp."
Where it's fine BLM land and national forests (dispersed), many interstate rest areas, some Walmart/truck-stop lots.
Where to avoid City streets with anti-dwelling ordinances; rest areas that cap stays at a few hours; anywhere posted "no overnight."
Fine risk City infractions (e.g. LA ~$25 under §85.02) up to towing in strict zones.

Is sleeping in your car legal in the US?

It depends on three things: the state, the land manager (city, county, federal), and the specific city ordinance. The single most useful rule of thumb: in most places you may park and sleep inside a legally parked vehicle, but you may not camp — no slide-outs, chairs, or outdoor cooking.

Rest areas

Only about a dozen states clearly permit overnight sleeping at interstate rest areas; many others cap stays between 2 and 8 hours, and some prohibit it. (For example, New York's Thruway service plazas are open 24 hours and you can rest in your vehicle, but posted limits are often ~3–4 hours, not a full night.) Always read the posted sign.

Public lands (the best free option)

On BLM land and in many national forests, dispersed car camping is allowed — often up to 14 days in a given area. This is the most reliable free, legal way to sleep in your car out West.

Walmart & commercial lots

Some Walmarts and truck stops allow overnight parking, but it's now decided store-by-store and by local ordinance. Always call the store and ask before relying on it.

Cities

Many cities restrict sleeping in a vehicle on public streets. Los Angeles, for example, limits vehicle dwelling between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. on residential streets and near parks, schools and daycares (LAMC §85.02), with infraction fines. San Francisco and New York City also restrict overnight stays in vehicles parked on streets. Rules change often — check the current municipal code.

🔋 Why EVs are great for this

In a Tesla or other EV, Camp Mode holds a comfortable cabin temperature overnight — quietly, with no idling or fumes. Add an EcoFlow power station to run lights and charge devices, and the desert or the mountains become a comfortable bedroom.

Sleep flat from coast to coast

No sloping seats or piles of gear. A Teraglide platform gives your Tesla, Subaru or SUV a flat, level bed with organised storage underneath — and folds away so it's still your daily driver.
