Description

Fits both 5-seat generations of the Model Y — 1st gen and Juniper, 2020 to present.

A full-length flat bed for two in the boot of a Model Y, with your gear in a drawer underneath instead of stacked on top of you. It folds completely into the trunk, so the rear seats stay usable for passengers and the car is an ordinary car on Monday. Nothing is drilled, bolted or glued to the vehicle.

Three things that decide whether you keep using it

  • Lift-up access to the sub-trunk. The bed top raises and stays raised, so you reach the fridge and the recovery kit without stripping the bed or unloading anything onto the ground.
  • Drawer runners that stop in both positions. Locked closed on the road, locked open while you cook. This is the detail that matters when you have parked on a camber and there is a hot pan on the table.
  • It folds into its own footprint. 91 × 97 × 25 cm folded. One person lifts it out, and the boot is a boot again.

Mini Kitchen option

The same drawer that holds your gear turns into somewhere to cook. A bamboo table clips on to make a prep bench at standing-lean height — chopping, sandwiches, the coffee kit. It comes off and stows flat when you are done, and the same surface takes a portable sink for washing up after dinner.

Inside the drawer: utensils, pans, a small gas stove, and tonight's food. One place, one pull, instead of a crate you unpack onto the ground. With the kitchen drawer fully out you can still reach the space under the bed, so dinner does not have to be packed away to get at the sleeping bags.

Cook at the open tailgate, standing — the tailgate keeps the rain off. Never run a gas burner inside a closed cabin.

Assembly, honestly

The PRO arrives in a flat pack and is assembled once, at home, with the tool supplied. After that it stays built and simply folds — it never comes apart again, and setup at the campsite is about a minute: drop it in, fold it open, mattress on.

So the one-minute claim is the setup on every trip after the first. It is not the unboxing, and we would rather say so here than have you find out on the driveway.

A note on the headrest and side wings

They are shaped to support specific parts of you while you are lying down, not to carry your whole weight. Do not sit on them, and do not use the headrest without the wings fitted.

The cost that keeps running

Anything on the roof is paid for every day, not just on camping days. On the same road trip our own Tesla used 140 Wh/km with a bare roof and 185 Wh/km with a roof box — 32% more energy, about a quarter of the range. A platform is in the boot on Friday and in the garage on Monday, so it costs nothing to carry.

The honest part

A platform is not the cheapest way to sleep in your car. An air mattress costs $50. But you'll fight it every morning — and then you'll stop going.

That's the real comparison. Not price against price, but how many nights you actually end up spending outside. A platform is the setup you'll still be using in five years.

Flat is not the same as level

Two different problems, and most people only fix one. A mattress bridges the gap over the folded seats, so the surface becomes flat. It does nothing about the slope — almost every boot floor tilts toward the tailgate, and you spend the night sliding downhill in your sleeping bag.

When a platform is the wrong buy

Four cases where we'd tell you not to:

  • You want to try one night and see. Buy a $50 mattress first. If you go out three times in a season, then talk to us.
  • You camp in a group and cook outside all evening. A tent gives you a room to stand in. The car is a bedroom, not a living room.
  • You need to stand up inside. No car platform gives you that. A van does.
  • Your boot is shorter than you are. Some cars simply don't have the length. We'd rather tell you that before you order than after.

Pick by what you're optimising for
