The extras nobody budgets for
The daily rate you see advertised is rarely the price you pay. These are the add-ons that catch travellers out — and they hit campervans hardest, because the excess is bigger and the vehicle is dearer to insure.

What you give up — and what you don't
An SUV setup isn't a campervan, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. You lose the built-in kitchen, the indoor sink and toilet, and standing headroom. You also lose the ability to freedom camp outside designated areas, because that requires a certified self-contained vehicle in much of New Zealand.
What you keep is the part that matters most at 10pm: a flat, full-length bed, your gear stored underneath rather than piled on top of you, a car that's easy to park and cheap to fuel, and hundreds of DOC campsites and holiday parks that are often in better spots than the freedom-camping pull-offs anyway.

- Campervan NZ$245/day — summer rate for a couple in a small self-contained campervan, insurance included (NZ Pocket Guide, 2026).
- SUV NZ$120/day — our estimate for a RAV4-class SUV in summer with insurance; it sits between the NZ$80/day small car and NZ$200/day large wagon in the same 2026 guide.
- Fuel NZ$2.67/L — national average (MBIE data via GlobalPetrolPrices, Feb 2026). Consumption figures are typical, not measured — your car and driving will vary.
- Campsites — DOC standard sites are NZ$10–20 per adult per night, serviced sites NZ$25, basic sites free (Department of Conservation). We've used NZ$15/adult/night, and credited the campervan with 7 free freedom-camping nights it can legally use as a self-contained vehicle.

Questions, answered
Will the rental company allow this?
Yes. The platform is free-standing — nothing is bolted, drilled, screwed or stuck to the car. You're simply placing cargo in the boot, exactly like luggage. Fold it out at night, fold it away in the morning.
How long does installation take?
A few minutes the first time, faster after that. We'll show you at pickup, and it comes with simple instructions.
Do I need any tools?
No. Nothing to assemble beyond unfolding the platform.
What size bed do I get?
LEVEL gives you a flat sleeping area up to 1890 mm long × 1100 mm wide (74 × 43 in) — comfortable for two adults. The length adjusts to your car, and an optional +100 mm extension is available for larger boots.
Is a mattress included?
Yes — a mattress comes with every rental at no extra cost. If you'd rather not pack linen, add a bedding pack for NZ$45 per trip.
Can I freedom camp anywhere?
NZ freedom camping rules require certified self-contained vehicles in many areas. With an SUV setup, stick to DOC campsites, holiday parks and designated non-self-contained sites — there are hundreds, and they're often in better spots anyway.
What if my rental car changes at pickup?
Not a problem — LEVEL is adjustable, so it fits most SUVs and wagons rather than one specific model. Just tell us the car you actually get and we'll make sure it works.
Where do I pick up and return the platform?
Free pickup from Silverdale, Auckland. Prefer to collect on arrival? We can meet you at Auckland Airport for NZ$70. The platform is returned to the same place — we don't offer one-way drop-offs in another city.
How much is the bond?
NZ$250–300, refundable after the platform comes back in good order. Returned excessively dirty? A NZ$60 cleaning fee applies — a quick wipe-down before you drop it off saves you that.
What happens if the platform is damaged?
Normal wear is expected — it's camping gear, not a museum piece. Anything beyond that is covered by the bond, and we'll always talk it through with you first.
