Where to Put the Fridge and Power Station in a Tesla Camper Setup
- Fridge — low, ventilated, out of the way. The sub-trunk if your car has one.
- Power station — within arm's reach. You'll handle it several times a day; the fridge you'll touch twice.
- Bed — sleep only. No cables across where your legs go.
And the rule that saves the most trouble: let the car do the climate. The power station is for gear.
A camping setup gets easier the moment you stop treating the boot as one big box. The question isn't what gear to bring — it's where each item lives, so you can still sleep flat, reach what matters, and not unpack half the car to make coffee.
Two items cause most of the layout stress: the fridge and the power station. Here are the numbers that decide where each one goes.
The numbers that decide your layout

Read that table once and the layout writes itself: the fridge needs a cold, ventilated, low place you rarely touch. The power station needs to be within arm's reach, because you'll handle it several times a day.
Rule one: the bed zone stays for sleeping
If you sleep in the car, the mattress is not storage. No food boxes, no charging bricks, no cables crossing where your legs go. The layout that works:
- cold storage low and tucked away
- power accessible but not underfoot
- small essentials near the doors or in the drawer
- sleeping surface clean
Fridge: the sub-trunk, if you have one
In a Model Y — and in a number of SUVs — the sub-trunk is the cleanest place for a compact fridge. Weight stays low, the main boot stays free, and cold food doesn't take over the space you sit, cook and sleep in.

No sub-trunk? Then the fridge goes on the boot floor under the platform, on the side you'll approach from, with its vent facing out into open space rather than into the wheel arch. Lower is still better — both for the centre of gravity and because cold air doesn't need help falling.
Ventilation is not optional
A compressor fridge rejects heat, and a fridge that can't breathe runs longer and eats the numbers in the table above. Practically:
- keep the vent side clear — no soft bags, towels or bedding against it
- don't wedge it in like a brick
- check the manual for your model's required clearance
If your setup needs the floor raised slightly for airflow, plan that before the first trip rather than after you notice poor cooling on day two.
Power station: close, not buried
You'll reach for the power station far more often than the fridge — phone, light, camera battery, taking it outside to cook. So it belongs where you can get it without unpacking.
- Near the drawer or boot opening. Best option if you use it daily. Shorter cables, easy to lift out.
- Sub-trunk only if it's backup. Fine for "leave it and forget it", poor for anything hourly.
- Never loose beside the mattress. Convenient until you want to stretch out at 1am.
Sizing it: at ~400 Wh a day for the fridge alone, a 1000 Wh unit covers a weekend with a margin, and roughly a day and a half in hot weather. Anything longer and you're planning a recharge, not a bigger battery.
An EV keeps its 12 V system topped up from the main pack. A combustion car doesn't — the starter battery has nothing recharging it while the engine is off.

Let the car do the climate

The layout that works for most weekends

On weight: the PRO main drawer is rated to 80 kg and the LEVEL drawer to 50 kg. A fridge and a power station together sit well inside that, so the constraint on this layout is space and access, not strength.
Why layout beats gear
Most first setups fail for small reasons, not big ones. Not because the car is too small — because the layout creates friction all day. You stop for lunch and can't reach the fridge. You go to bed with cables across the mattress. You wake up and unload half the boot to boil water.
A platform fixes half of it by giving you flat sleep with storage underneath. The layout finishes the job by deciding what belongs where.
