Roof Tent vs Car Camping Platform: Which One Suits You?
Setup times and mattress thickness get argued about endlessly. These four decide more, and they're the ones most comparisons skip:
- Legal status. In much of Europe and Australia the line isn't where you sleep — it's whether anything of yours is outside the vehicle. A deployed roof tent is on the wrong side of it.
- Condensation. Fabric collects it every night, rain or not, and it has to be dried before storage. Plywood in a closed boot doesn't.
- Bulk. Height barriers, your garage, and tens of kilos at the highest point of the car.
- Aerodynamics. We measured a roof load at +32% energy, −24% range — paid every day of the year, not just camping days.
Where the roof tent genuinely wins
Worth saying first, because most comparisons written by platform makers skip it.
- Your boot stays empty. The bed is on the roof, so the whole cargo area is still cargo area. If you travel with a lot of gear, or with the rear seats occupied, that matters more than anything else on this page.
- You can sit up. Most roof tents give you real headroom. No car platform does.
- Your boot length stops mattering. If you're 190 cm and the car is short, the roof solves a problem the interior can't.
Test yourself against those three, honestly
1. Does your boot really need to stay full while you sleep? Unpack the car after your next trip and look at what actually came. Most weekenders carry less than they think, and it fits under a bed.
2. Do you sit up in the evening, or are you asleep? If you're in bed at ten and out at seven, sitting height is a feature you're paying for and not using.
3. Measure your boot length against your height. If it genuinely comes up short, that's the one argument on this page we can't answer, and we'd rather tell you than talk you round.
If one of those describes you, buy the roof tent. If none does, the four costs below are what you'd be paying for nothing.
1. Legal: a campsite, or a parked car
This decides where you can actually sleep, and it's the argument that gets missed most.
Across most of Europe and much of Australia the legal line isn't where you sleep, it's whether anything of yours extends beyond the vehicle. Sleeping inside a legally parked car is widely tolerated. Extending the vehicle's profile — an awning, a chair, a tent — is camping, and camping is what gets fined.

A deployed roof tent is, visually and often legally, a campsite. It's the single most visible thing you can do to a car, at the exact moment you'd rather nobody noticed you. A platform keeps everything inside the bodywork, so the car reads as parked — which is the whole basis of the tolerance.
There's a practical corollary. With a roof tent up, you cannot move the car. If the weather turns, the spot feels wrong, or a ranger asks you to move on, you climb down, pack a wet tent and stow the ladder before you can drive — roughly ten minutes, committed to a place you've already decided to leave. With a platform you get in the front and go.
The country detail differs everywhere and is worth reading before you commit to either: where you're allowed to sleep, country by country.
2. Condensation: something to dry, or nothing
Every tent collects moisture overnight, and it has nothing to do with rain. Warm damp air from breathing meets a cold surface, reaches dew point, and condenses. Fabric is thin, so it goes cold fast and collects the lot.
The consequence is a chore rather than a discomfort: you cannot store a roof tent damp. Pack it wet and it needs to come back out and dry, or you get mildew and the smell that follows. That job waits for you at home after every trip, and it's the most common reason roof tents end up unused in a garage.
A platform is plywood and steel inside a closed car. Fold it, shut the boot, drive home. Nothing to dry, ever.
Condensation inside the car still has to be managed — but it's managed with air, not with a drying rack. In an EV a parked climate mode does it for you: our own test ran 9 hours at −7 °C on 24% of the battery with zero condensation on the glass. In a petrol or diesel car it's two windows cracked on opposite sides with mesh. Full method: keeping the car dry overnight.
3. Bulk: height, weight, and where the weight sits
Places a raised roof can't go
Dull, practical, and it shows up on day two of a trip.
- Multi-storey and underground car parks — the height barrier decides, not you.
- Your own garage, for some people. Measure before you buy, not after.
- Height-restricted barriers at trailheads, beach access roads and reserve car parks — often exactly where you were heading.
- Drive-throughs, some ferries, any low overhang you'd normally never think about.
None is dramatic on its own. Together they change your route.
Weight in the worst possible place
The point experienced off-road drivers raise first, and it almost never appears in a roof tent review. A tent plus the bars to carry it is tens of kilograms at the highest point of the vehicle — and once occupied, a couple of adults are up there too.
Raising the centre of gravity costs you precisely where a roof tent is meant to shine: more body roll through corners, more movement in crosswinds and when a truck passes, less margin on off-camber ground and side slopes. People who drive difficult terrain spend real money getting weight low in a vehicle. A roof tent spends it the other way.
Check before you buy: your car's dynamic roof load limit — the figure for driving, not for parked. It's usually lower than people expect, and a tent plus bars can account for most of it. It's in the owner's manual.
A platform puts the same weight on the boot floor, about as low as anything in a car can sit. The car drives like the car.
The ladder, and who can't use it
- Dogs can't climb one. If your dog sleeps with you, a roof tent doesn't work — and lifting a large dog up and down in the dark isn't a plan.
- Small children mean somebody is on ladder duty every time anyone needs the toilet.
- Anyone with a knee, hip or balance problem is excluded from the bed entirely.
- Two people, one ladder. When one of you gets up at 3am, both of you are awake.

4. Aerodynamics: the 350 days you aren't camping
The real cost of a roof tent never appears on the price tag. It's up there year-round, adding drag to every journey.
We measured our own. Same road trip, mostly open-road driving: 140 Wh/km with a bare roof, 185 Wh/km with a roof box fitted.

Two honest notes on that figure. First, it was a hard box — the aerodynamically kind option. A roof tent is taller, blunter and usually wears a fabric cover, so treat 32% as the floor rather than the number.
Second, and this one cuts against us: a Tesla is unusually slippery to start with, so adding drag inflates its percentage more than it would on an SUV that was already boxy. The energy lost is similar either way; the percentage flatters our argument. Worth knowing before you quote it at anyone.
Where it bites hardest is long-distance driving with sparse charging or fuel. Losing a quarter of your range changes which legs are possible, not just what they cost — and it does it on exactly the routes with no second option.

Choose the roof tent if
- You need the boot for gear, or the rear seats for people, while you sleep.
- You want to sit up inside.
- Your car's boot is shorter than you are.
- You camp mainly at proper campsites, where being visibly camped is the point — which removes the legal objection entirely.
Choose the platform if
- You sleep in places where looking like a parked car matters.
- You want to be able to drive away immediately, at any hour.
- You'd rather not deal with wet fabric at home on Sunday night.
- Height barriers, your garage or a low ferry deck are part of your life.
- You drive rough or off-camber ground and want the weight low.
- Your range or fuel budget is tight on long legs.
- You travel with a dog, small children, or anyone who shouldn't be on a ladder.
- Your car has to be an ordinary car from Monday to Friday — LEVEL fits most SUVs, wagons and EVs.
One of the three roof-tent arguments is settled with a tape measure, not an opinion.
If your boot really is shorter than you are, the roof solves something the interior can't, and we'd rather say so than talk you round. But "it feels short" and "it measures short" are different — and the number people get wrong is length, because they take it along the floor instead of at bed height.

Is a roof tent legal where sleeping in a car is legal?
Often not. In much of Europe and Australia the rule turns on whether anything extends beyond the vehicle: sleeping inside a legally parked car is widely tolerated, while setting up outside it counts as camping and can be fined. Italy writes this into its road code; Spain draws the same line. A deployed roof tent reads as camping both visually and, in several countries, legally.
Does a roof tent affect fuel economy?
Yes, and by more than most people expect. On the same road trip we measured our own Tesla at 140 Wh/km with a bare roof and 185 Wh/km with a roof box — 32% more energy and about a quarter of the range. A roof tent is bulkier than a box, so expect at least that. The penalty applies every day the load is fitted, not only on camping days.
Can you pack a roof tent away wet?
You can, but you shouldn't leave it packed wet — damp fabric in a closed cover risks mildew and odour. It needs to come out and dry, which is a chore after every damp night. Fabric collects condensation even without rain, because it goes cold fast and reaches dew point before the air does.
Does a roof tent affect handling or off-road ability?
Yes. A tent and its bars put tens of kilograms at the highest point of the car, raising the centre of gravity — more body roll, more movement in crosswinds, and less margin on side slopes and off-camber ground. Check your car's dynamic roof load limit too; it's lower than most people assume. A boot platform keeps the weight at floor level.
Can you drive with a roof tent set up?
No. It has to be packed down and the ladder stowed first, which takes around ten minutes. If you might need to move at short notice — weather, a ranger, or a spot that stops feeling right — that matters more than it sounds.
Where can't you go with a roof tent fitted?
Multi-storey and underground car parks, height-restricted barriers at trailheads and beach access roads, some ferries, drive-throughs, and possibly your own garage. Measure your garage before buying rather than after.
Can a dog sleep in a roof tent?
Not practically. Dogs can't use a ladder, and carrying one up and down in the dark isn't a workable routine. Sleeping inside the car means the dog simply gets in with you.
Do I need a roof rack for a roof tent?
Almost always, and it's a real additional cost on top of the tent. A boot platform needs no rack and no permanent modification to the car.
