Condensation and Ventilation in a Petrol or Diesel Car: How to Stay Dry Overnight

The short version for petrol and diesel cars
  1. You cannot idle the engine for heat. That rule is not negotiable — see below.
  2. Two windows cracked 15 mm on opposite sides, fitted with rain guards so you can leave them open in rain.
  3. A 5 V USB fan aimed at the ceiling, plus a desiccant tub under a seat. Ventilate, circulate, absorb — in that order.
  4. Warm the person, not the car. A car shell has almost no insulation; a sleeping bag does.

Why a combustion car is a different problem

An EV owner can hold cabin temperature all night on the traction battery. You can't — and the workaround people reach for is the one that kills them.

Never sleep with the engine running

This is the whole safety story, and it's worth more than a bullet point.

Carbon monoxide from a blocked or badly placed exhaust reaches dangerous levels astonishingly fast. In one broadcast test with a snow-clogged tailpipe, a professional alarm hit 90 ppm in 1 minute 24 seconds. Fifteen to twenty minutes in a car like that can be fatal.

This isn't theoretical. After one US blizzard at least six people died of CO poisoning, including a mother and her one-year-old son sitting in a running car with the tailpipe buried in snow. The CDC counts more than 400 unintentional CO deaths a year in the US alone, with over 50,000 emergency room visits.

If you are ever forced to run the engine in cold weather: clear snow from the tailpipe and undercarriage first, run it only in short bursts rather than continuously, and keep a window open. Sleeping through it is not an option.

The same rule covers anything that burns fuel inside the car — no gas heater, no stove, no flame lantern. And a battery-powered CO alarm costs very little and is the only thing that will actually warn you. If you sleep in a combustion car regularly, put one in the car.

If you drive a hybrid, check this while you're awake

This one catches people out, and the article you're reading would be incomplete without it.

On some hybrids, leaving the climate control on while parked will start the engine by itself to maintain cabin temperature — which puts you straight back into the exhaust conversation, except asleep and without having chosen it.

Behaviour varies by model and by setting, so don't assume either way. Check the owner's manual, then test it: park up, set the climate as you would overnight, and sit with it for half an hour while awake to see whether the engine cycles. If it does, treat your hybrid as a petrol car for the purposes of this guide and use the passive methods below.

The moisture maths

A sleeping adult puts roughly 0.2–0.5 litres of water into the air overnight through breath and skin. Two people double it. A wet jacket, a damp towel or a dog adds more on top.

In a sealed car that water has nowhere to go. It condenses on the coldest surface, which is the glass — single-pane, uninsulated, and losing heat to the night faster than anything else in the car. A still layer of warm damp air sits against that cold surface, reaches its dew point, and gives up its water. The fogged windows you wake up to are last night's breath, and in a combustion car nothing is quietly removing it while you sleep.

What it damages, not just what it looks like

  • Window channels and door cards — water runs down the glass and collects where it can't dry.
  • The headliner, if airflow is poor up high. Damp fabric against a cold roof is where musty smells and mould start.
  • Your bedding, which is the one that actually ruins the trip. A sleeping bag insulates by trapping air in its loft, and damp down or synthetic collapses. The humid night is also the cold night — and people blame the temperature.

The three levers, in order

There are only three things you can do about humidity in a car. Everything below is one of them, and they work best in this sequence.

1. Add less

Wet gear out of the sleeping area. This is free, and it's the lever people skip because it feels too simple to matter.

2. Move it out

Cross-ventilation plus a fan. This is the one that actually does the work, and no amount of the third lever replaces it.

3. Absorb the remainder

Desiccant. Useful, limited, and only worth anything once the first two are done.

Technique 1: two windows, 15 mm, opposite sides

Cross-flow is what moves air, and cross-flow needs two openings. One window cracked wide does far less than two cracked slightly at opposite ends of the car, because a single opening has no path — air has nowhere to go.

  • 15 mm is enough. Roughly a finger's width. You lose very little warmth and gain a genuine air path.
  • Diagonal beats parallel — front left and rear right, so the air crosses the cabin rather than skimming one side.
  • Open them as you set up, not once the glass is already streaming. Condensation is far easier to prevent than to clear.

Technique 2: rain guards, so weather doesn't close your windows

The most common reason people seal the car up is rain. Window deflectors — the moulded strips that clip or stick above the door frame — solve exactly that: they let you keep a 15 mm gap open through a wet night without water running down the inside of the door card.

They're cheap, they fit almost every mainstream model, and for anyone sleeping in a combustion car regularly they're the single highest-value accessory on this page. Bug mesh over the gap handles the other reason people close up, which is summer.

Technique 3: a 5 V USB fan, aimed at the ceiling

Still air is what lets moisture settle. A small USB fan running off a power bank breaks up the stagnant layer sitting against cold glass and the roof lining.

  • Point it at the ceiling or the windows, not at yourself — the job is disturbing that boundary layer, not cooling you down.
  • A 5 V fan draws so little that a normal phone power bank runs it all night.
  • It works alongside cracked windows, not instead of them. A fan in a sealed car just moves the same wet air around.

Technique 4: a desiccant tub, as a supplement

Calcium chloride tubs (DampRid and equivalents) and silica gel packs genuinely pull water out of cabin air — silica gel absorbs around 32% of its own weight in the right conditions.

Place them under the front seats and in the cargo area, low down where cool damp air collects. Two honest caveats: they are a supplement to ventilation, never a replacement, and calcium chloride tubs hold liquid water — keep them upright and don't kick one over in the dark.

Technique 5: wet gear discipline

Everything damp you bring inside evaporates overnight and lands on your windows.

  • Wet coats, towels and swimwear go in the boot or a sealed dry bag — never beside your head.
  • Muddy boots stay outside in a dry bag; the clean pair can come in.
  • A wet dog is a moisture source with a heartbeat. Towel it off before bed.
  • Shake off and hang anything you can before you close the doors for the night.

Technique 6: the five-minute morning routine

Some moisture always gets through. What matters is not driving off with it.

  1. Open both front doors for five minutes while you pack the bed away.
  2. Wipe the glass with a microfibre cloth — keep one in the door pocket for this.
  3. Air the bedding rather than folding it damp. Damp bedding on night two is far worse than night one.

Skip this and moisture accumulates trip by trip, which is how cars end up smelling musty.

Staying warm without the engine

Start from the physics: a car shell is thin metal and single glazing, with essentially no insulation. It cools to near outside temperature within a couple of hours no matter what you do. So the winning strategy isn't heating the space — it's insulating the person and slowing the loss through the glass.

Worth knowing what the alternative looks like: an EV running Camp Mode holds cabin temperature all night with no combustion at all. Our own measurement was 9 hours at −7 °C for 24% of the battery, with completely dry windows in the morning. That's the gap a combustion car is closing with bags, covers and airflow.

Before you sleep: the checklist

  • Two windows cracked 15 mm, diagonal corners
  • Rain guards fitted if there's any chance of weather
  • USB fan on, pointed at the ceiling
  • Desiccant tub under a seat, upright
  • Wet gear in the boot or a dry bag
  • Insulating layer under you, not just over you
  • Engine off, keys away — no exceptions
  • Hybrid: climate off, so the engine can't start itself
  • Microfibre cloth within reach for the morning
Where this doesn't work
  • Serious cold is a gear problem, not a technique problem. Below what your sleeping bag is rated for, no amount of airflow management makes the night comfortable. That's when a professionally installed night heater or a different trip is the honest answer.
  • Airflow and warmth pull against each other. Every technique here trades a little heat for dry glass. That trade is worth it, but it is a trade, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.
  • A platform doesn't ventilate anything. It fixes the bed, not the air. Two separate jobs.
  • If the car leaks, none of this applies. Water pooling in one spot is a seal or drain fault. Fix the car first.

Where the platform fits in

Airflow handles the water. A platform handles everything else: a flat, level bed above the folded seats, gear stored underneath instead of piled around your head, and the whole thing folds away so the car is a normal car again on Monday.

Storage underneath matters more than it sounds for this particular problem. Bags and damp gear kept below the sleeping surface, away from your face and away from the cold glass, is exactly the layout that keeps moisture off your bedding. Piling gear around your head does the opposite.

Moisture is one of two things that ruin a night in a car. The other is gravity: folded rear seats are rarely flat and almost never level, and three degrees of tilt you can't see moves a body about 10 cm from head to foot over the course of the night. Airflow won't touch that one.

Can I sleep in a petrol or diesel car with the engine running for heat?

No. Carbon monoxide builds up fast, especially if the exhaust is obstructed — a test with a snow-clogged tailpipe reached a harmful 90 ppm in under 90 seconds, and 15–20 minutes in those conditions can be fatal. Use a proper sleeping bag, insulated window covers, or a professionally installed night heater.

Will my hybrid start its engine while I'm asleep?
