Car Camping Safety: How to Ventilate Your Tesla Overnight
- Camp Mode on (park → climate → Camp), arrive with 30–40% battery — 50%+ in winter.
- No Camp Mode? Two windows cracked on opposite sides, with mesh screens.
- Never run a fuel-burning heater or stove inside the car. No exceptions.
- Your Tesla produces no exhaust — but other people's engines do. Don't sleep beside an idling vehicle.
Sleeping in your Tesla means doors locked, rain outside, and a flat bed inside. The one thing people get wrong is air. Here's how to get it right — including our own battery numbers from a −7 °C night.
Why ventilation matters
A sleeping adult releases roughly 0.2–0.5 litres of moisture overnight, through breath and skin. Two people is double that, in the same small volume of air.
That water has to go somewhere, and it goes to the coldest surface in the car: the glass, which is losing heat to the night faster than anything else. Fogged windows at 6am are last night's breathing, condensed.
What actually goes wrong if you don't
It isn't just an inconvenient view. The sequence is worth knowing because each step makes the next one worse:
- Humidity climbs, because there's nowhere for it to escape to.
- Moisture condenses on the glass and the cold metal around it.
- Water runs down and pools in the door cards, seals and window channels.
- Your bedding takes up the rest of it.
- Damp insulation stops insulating. A sleeping bag works by trapping air in its loft; wet down and wet synthetic both collapse. So the humid night is also the cold night, and people usually blame the temperature.
Moving air breaks the chain at step one, which is why it's the cheapest thing you can fix.
Two things people get wrong about the air
You won't run out of oxygen
Cars aren't airtight — they leak continuously around seals, drains and vents. What builds up is carbon dioxide and humidity, and what that produces is stuffiness and a poor night's sleep rather than danger. If you wake up feeling like the air is thick, that's your cue to open something, not a crisis.
Where carbon monoxide actually comes from
Your Tesla produces none. No engine, no exhaust. That's a real advantage and it's worth being precise about, because it means there are only two ways CO can reach you:
- Something you brought inside. A gas heater, a stove, a fuel lantern. Don't. Electric only, ideally outside the sleeping space.
- Somebody else's engine. This is the one nobody mentions. A diesel truck idling through the night a few metres upwind, or a car warming up beside you at a rest area, is producing exhaust that can find its way into your cabin through cracked windows or the ventilation intake.
The fix is dull and effective: park away from idling vehicles, and if you arrive at a rest area and end up in a line of running trucks, move. If you ever use any combustion appliance anywhere near where you sleep, a small battery CO alarm costs very little and is the only thing that will tell you.
Option 1: Camp Mode
The fan runs all night, the temperature holds, and the USB ports stay powered. The windows stay clear too, because moving air keeps the glass closer to cabin temperature and stops a saturated layer forming against it. You wake up to dry glass rather than a wet cave.
Turn it on: park → open climate controls → select Camp. Works in Model Y, 3, S and X.
What it costs in battery — real numbers

Camp Mode needs more than roughly 20% charge to keep running, so the arrival figure is arithmetic rather than preference:
- Summer: arrive with 30–40%.
- Winter: arrive with 50%+. Our −7 °C night used 24% — add the 20% floor and a margin for the morning drive, and 50% is the honest minimum.
9 hours of sleep at −7 °C with the heating on took 24% of the battery. Warm all night — and not a drop of condensation on the windows in the morning.
Option 2: Cracked windows and mesh screens
In mild weather, windows open a few centimetres do the job.
- Open them on opposite sides. Cross-flow needs two openings, and diagonally opposite corners work better than two windows on the same side. One window open wide moves less air than two open a little.
- Mesh screens on both of those windows, not just one — insects will find the unscreened one. Clip-on or magnetic screens for Tesla doors store flat and fit in seconds.
- Rain guards change what's possible. Without them, rain means closing up, and closing up means the fogged-window sequence above. With them you can leave a gap open all night in weather.
- This is also your fallback when the battery is too low for Camp Mode.
Option 3: A small fan on a power station
Protecting your range, or camping in a car without Camp Mode? A USB fan on a portable power station runs quietly all night and takes nothing from the car's battery. Aim it at the ceiling rather than at yourself — you want the air in the cabin turning over, not a draught on your face.
Winter version: electric heater only, with automatic shutoff and tip-over protection. Propane and gas stay outside. That's the carbon monoxide rule again.
Summer: the same problem, upside down
Most ventilation advice is written for cold nights. Warm ones are a different job, and in some places the harder one.
- Where you park at 4pm decides how the night starts. A car that has sat in afternoon sun radiates heat for hours after sunset, because the whole body of it has soaked up energy all day.
- Park for morning shade, not afternoon shade. The sun that wakes you at 6am is the one that matters. Work out where east is before you settle.
- Cross-ventilation matters more, not less. Warm air holds more moisture, so a humid night can produce more condensation than a dry freeze.
- Camp Mode cools as well as heats, and cooling costs battery the same way heating does — how much depends entirely on the outside temperature.
- Never leave children or pets in a parked car. Cabin temperatures climb faster than people expect, including on days that don't feel dangerous.
Six tricks you learn on the second night
Window shades save battery. Glass is where the heat escapes. Insulated shades keep the warmth in, so the climate system works less — and you get privacy and a dark car at sunrise as a bonus. In winter this is the cheapest way to shrink the overnight drain.
Turn the dome lights off before sleep. The moment one of you opens a door at 2am, the cabin lights up like a fridge. Set the dome lights to Off before bed: Controls → Lights, or just tap the light's lens. Your partner sleeps through your midnight exit.
Shoes sleep inside — or outside in a dry bag. Left in the open they're soaked with dew by morning, or frozen solid in winter. The clean pair comes in with you; the muddy pair stays out, sealed where dew and frost can't reach it, and the mud stays out of your bedroom.
Winter: the boot end is the cold end. Warm air comes from the vents up front and barely reaches your feet at the tailgate. An extra blanket over the foot end fixes what Camp Mode can't. We learned this one the cold way.
Sentry Mode is a judgment call. It keeps the cameras and computer awake all night — about 5% of battery by morning. At a campground with a good reputation, switch it off and pocket the saving. Somewhere you're less sure about, keep it on: that 5% buys you cameras watching while you sleep.
Put a fireplace on the screen. In the Toybox you'll find a fireplace that plays on the main display. Zero heat, a surprising amount of cosiness — especially with frost on the other side of the glass.
Driving something other than an EV?
Everything above leans on Camp Mode, and a petrol or diesel car doesn't have it. You can't hold cabin temperature all night, and you must never idle the engine to try. Condensation control becomes passive: cracked windows with rain guards, a USB fan, desiccant, and wet-gear discipline.
There's also a second battery to think about — a combustion car's 12 V starter battery has nothing recharging it while the engine is off, so running a fan or lights from the 12 V socket all night can leave you unable to start.

Before you sleep: 60-second checklist
- Battery: 30–40% (summer) / 50%+ (winter)
- Camp Mode on — or two windows cracked on opposite sides, both screened
- Nobody idling nearby, and no line of running trucks
- Wet clothes and towels out of the car — they're condensation machines
- No fuel-burning anything inside
- Parked for morning shade (summer) or out of the wind (winter)
- Window shades up — insulated ones save battery in the cold
- Dome lights off, so a midnight door doesn't wake the car
- Shoes inside — or outside in a dry bag
- Winter: extra blanket at the foot end, since no vents reach the boot
- Sentry: off at a trusted campground, on anywhere else
- Below about 20% charge, Camp Mode won't run at all. No amount of setting it up beforehand changes that — plan the arrival charge or plan the blankets.
- Not every EV has an equivalent. Some can't hold climate while parked at all. One test night on your own driveway in similar weather tells you more than any article.
- A platform doesn't ventilate anything. It fixes the bed, not the air. These are two separate jobs and both need doing.
- Our 24% is one night in one car. Battery size and age, your temperature setting and the wind will all move it. Treat it as a realistic worst-ish case for a freezing night, not a promise.
Where the platform fits in
Ventilation solves the air. A platform solves the sleep:
- A flat, level bed above the sloping boot floor — two different problems, and only adjustable legs fix both.
- Gear underneath, not stacked around your head — which also means fewer door openings at 1am, and every door opening is heat you have to put back.
- It folds away when Monday comes. Your car stays a car.

Camp Mode is the reason the glass stays dry — and the reason you wake up with less range than you parked with. Our own night at −7 °C cost 24%. Is it safe to sleep in a Tesla with the windows closed?
With Camp Mode on, the climate system keeps air moving all night. Without it, crack two windows on opposite sides — the car stays lockable and rain stays out either way.
Do the windows fog up overnight?
Not with Camp Mode — air keeps circulating, so moisture never settles on the glass. We saw zero condensation even after 9 hours at −7 °C. Sleeping without ventilation is a different story: that's your half-litre of breath on the windows, and doubled if there are two of you.
Can carbon monoxide get into an electric car?
Not from the car itself — there's no engine and no exhaust. It can only come from something you bring inside, such as a gas heater or stove, or from another vehicle's exhaust nearby. Don't sleep beside an idling engine, and if you use any combustion appliance near where you sleep, fit a small battery CO alarm.
Will I run out of air sleeping in a car?
No. Cars leak continuously around seals and vents, so oxygen isn't the issue. What builds up is carbon dioxide and humidity, which makes the air feel stuffy and the sleep worse rather than being dangerous.
How much battery does Camp Mode use overnight?
Tesla's estimate is about 1% per hour. In our own test at −7 °C with the heating on, 9 hours took 24%. Plan around 10% for a mild night and 25% for a freezing one.
Is condensation only a winter problem?
No. Warm air holds more moisture, so a mild damp night often produces more condensation than a dry freeze. Humidity matters more than temperature.
Can I use a propane or gas heater inside the car?
No. Fuel-burning heaters and stoves produce carbon monoxide, which is dangerous inside a car even with a window open. Use an electric heater with auto-shutoff, or extra blankets.
What if my battery is below 20%?
Camp Mode won't run. Use cracked windows with mesh screens, and a fan on a power station if you have one.
