The Story of Teraglide: Creating the Ultimate Car Camping Platform

While specific statistics on the exact number of individuals who engage in car camping—sleeping inside their vehicles—are limited, the trend is gaining significant traction. According to a report by Modern Campground, interest in car camping has surged by 41% since 2019, indicating a growing preference for this style of camping. 

Inspired by our own adventures in a Tesla Model Y, we at Teraglide set out to create the perfect car camping solution. Our mission: to provide families with a comfortable sleep and maximum convenience during their travels.

The Journey Begins: Our First Platform for Tesla Model Y

Our initial product was tailored specifically for the Tesla Model Y, offering:

• Quick Setup: Deploy the platform in under a minute.

• No Installation Required: Simply place it in the trunk.

• Sub-Trunk Access: A lift system ensures easy reach to the sub-trunk.

However, the original design, made from plywood, was heavy and lacked an integrated drawer. The lift system also needed refinement for smoother sub-trunk access.

Evolving Design and Materials

To enhance our product, we experimented with various materials and chose High-Pressure Laminate (HPL) for its lightweight durability. Improvements included:

• Integrated Drawer: Equipped with sturdy sliders, perfect for storing kitchen gear, clothing, and essentials.

• Advanced Lift System: Provides effortless, noise-free access to the sub-trunk.

Expanding to Other Vehicles

Recognizing growing demand, we adapted our platforms for various popular car models. Through precise scanning and measurements, we developed solutions that fit different makes and models, maintaining the benefits of the original platform.

Introducing Kitchen Modules and Solo Platforms

Understanding the needs of travellers who enjoy cooking outdoors, we designed kitchen modules featuring spacious work surfaces, drawers, and compartments for refrigerators and other gear.

For solo adventurers, we developed a single-person platform that includes a compact kitchen module, doubling as a workspace to maximize functionality in limited spaces.
