Headroom vs Storage: Choosing the Right Teraglide Platform Height for Tesla Camping

When you turn your Tesla into a mini camper, one question shows up very quickly: how high should the camping platform be? Higher platforms give you more storage underneath. Lower platforms give you more headroom for sitting up, changing clothes, or just stretching out under the glass roof.

With the Teraglide PRO camping platform for Tesla Model Y, you can choose between a lower setup and a higher setup. The same logic also applies to the custom platforms we build for other SUVs and vans.

This guide walks you through the trade-offs so you can decide what’s right for your trips.

Why Platform Height Matters in a Tesla

The Tesla Model Y already gives you a generous, open feeling thanks to the panoramic glass roof. But once you add a platform and mattress, every centimetre starts to count.

Platform height affects:

  • Headroom: How easily you can sit upright, read, work on a laptop, or change clothes inside the car.
  • Usable storage: What actually fits under the bed: fridge, water, cooking box, duffels, crates.
  • Overall comfort: Whether your camping setup feels like a low cave or a small studio with a view.

Outdoor guides like REI’s tips for sleeping in your car remind people that a good car-camping setup is not just about the mattress – it’s also about airflow, space to move, and staying organised. Platform height directly influences all of that.

How the Teraglide PRO Platform Is Built

Every Teraglide PRO is built from 17–18 mm plywood, with a slatted, bed-like surface that feels more like furniture than DIY boards. The sleeping area is tested to support around 180 kg of body weight, plus an additional load in the drawer (about 50 kg) and on the bamboo table (about 15 kg).

The whole platform folds completely into the trunk, so your rear seats remain free for daily use. No drilling, no permanent modifications – just strap it in, and you’re ready to go.

If you’re new to this style of setup, start with our overview post: Effortless Car Camping: Set Up Your Teraglide Platform in Minutes.

Option 1: Lower Platform – Maximum Headroom

The lower configuration is ideal if you care most about how it feels to be inside the car.

Best for:

  • Taller campers who like to sit upright comfortably.
  • People who spend time inside the car reading, working, or hiding from rain.
  • Anyone who is a bit sensitive to “low ceilings” or claustrophobic spaces.

With a lower platform height, you can usually:

  • You can lean back against the seats and sit semi-upright. This makes it much easier to work, relax, or change clothes inside the car.
  • Use the Tesla’s glass roof to keep the space feeling open and bright in the daytime.
  • Move around more easily when changing into hiking clothes or getting kids ready for bed.

You still have storage underneath. The space in the drawer is just a bit lower, so you simply pack items that fit that height. That aligns well with minimalist car-camping checklists like the one from Fresh Off The Grid, which recommends packing light and using stackable, easy-to-move containers.

Option 2: Higher Platform – Maximum Storage

The higher configuration lifts the sleeping surface by several extra centimetres. Those centimetres don’t sound like much, but they unlock a lot of extra storage volume under the bed.

Best for:

  • Longer trips where you carry more gear.
  • People who like everything to have a fixed place: cooking box, food crates, camera gear, etc.

With the higher setup on a Tesla Model Y, you can typically:

  • Slide in a compact 12 V fridge or cooler under the platform or in the sub-trunk.
  • Store a Dometic GO-style water jug upright.
  • Keep separate boxes for food, clothes, and outdoor gear so nothing ends up on the mattress.

The Teraglide PRO lift-up system still lets you access the sub-trunk, even when the platform is installed. That means cold food, drinks, and extra gear stay tucked away but are always reachable.

Yes, you trade a bit of headroom – but because the Tesla roof is so open, many people still feel comfortable sitting up, especially closer to the rear seats.

The 60/40 Layout: Headroom and Storage in One Setup

Another way we balance headroom and storage is through the 60/40 sleeping layout available on the Teraglide PRO.

Instead of using the full width as a single bed all the time, you can:

  • Use the 60% side as your solo sleeping area.
  • Use the 40% side as a dedicated gear zone or mini “pantry”.
  • Switch to the full-width configuration when travelling as a couple.

In practice this means you keep plenty of headroom above your main sleeping side, while the “gear side” can host taller boxes or a bag stack that you don’t need to climb over at night.

How to Decide: A Simple Checklist

Still unsure which height to choose? Run through this quick checklist:

Choose a Lower Platform if:

  • You’re tall, or you know you’ll sit up a lot inside the car.
  • You mostly do 1–3 night trips with light packing.
  • You’re a bit sensitive to low ceilings or “cave” feelings.
  • You prioritise cozy, open space over carrying every possible gadget.

Choose a Higher Platform if:

  • You’re planning longer trips where storage and organisation really matter.
  • You travel with kids or pets and need more separate bins for everyone’s stuff.
  • You’re okay with slightly less headroom in exchange for a very tidy trunk.

Whichever option you choose, the core experience stays the same: a flat, solid, quiet bed that folds back into the trunk when you get home.

Measuring Your Own Comfort Zone

If you want to be very precise before ordering, you can do a quick at-home test:

  1. Fold the rear seats flat in your Tesla Model Y.
  2. Stack boxes or boards to roughly the planned platform height (low vs high).
  3. Sit on top with a camping mattress and pillow.
  4. Check how it feels to:
    • Sit cross-legged or with your back against the seats.
    • Lean forward to reach a bag or your phone.
    • Turn on your side and stretch out.

This simple test often gives a clear answer in minutes.
